Sgt Roberto Ituarte Memorial Committee Newsletter
and Upcoming Fundraisers
March 5, 2007
PLEASE NOTE: THE OPENING CEREMONY HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO NOVEMBER, 2007!!
The Sgt Roberto Ituarte Elementary School will be having an opening ceremony on May 18, 2007 at 5:00 p.m.. We would like to extend an invitation to those of you who can join us. Please email Dolores Ituarte-Valenzuela at at lola_v63@yahoo.com or call 581-6848 and I will be
glad to provide more information regarding this honored occasion.
The Roberto Ituarte Memorial Committee is currently spearheading several fund raising events for
the school. We recently held a meeting on February 27, 2007. Mr. Carlos Amato, the school's
principal and Ms. Amy Serafini, vice-principal as our guests. Several fund raising projects were
brought up and discussed including:
BRONZE STATUE AND PLAQUE: A bronze status and plaque that will be dedicated on behalf of the
committee to the school in honor of Sgt Roberto Ituarte. The statue will be of a child sitting
and reading a book or several children playing. The committee will be having several fundraisers
and hope to see this project complete by the opening ceremony date.
ENCHILADA DINNER: We will be hosting an enchilada dinner on April 13th from 3 p.m to 7 p.m. at
the school as a fund raising project. We will be needing volunteers to work 2-hour shifts from
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, you can email me at lola_v63@yahoo.com and I will be glad
to give you the times that are still available. (For additional information on the dinner and where
to get tickets, Please see the "EVENTS" page on this website)
LIBRARY BOOK AND SPORTS EQUIPMENT DRIVE - We will be having separate fundraisers for these
projects as well. One news item to report is that Ms. Serafini was able to secure 50 books per
teacher from a store here in El Paso called Gem's Gems. Mrs. Madriles (Grace Elizabeth's mother)
was inspired to open a book store in memory of her daughter who was killed in a car accident in
2002 at the age of 16. The monetary donations that the family received all went into buying books.
This will mean 2,000 "gently-used" books for the school classrooms. If any of you would like to
donate a book/s to the school in the name of a loved one, you can send me an email and I will be
glad to give you more information regarding this. The school is also working on several fund raising events to raise monies for more books and
sports equipment.
SCHOOL MARQUEE: The school is in need of a marquee. Mr. Amato is currently getting price quotes
which will be around $4,000.00 - $5,000.00. Commissioner Luis Sariana has donated $2500.00
towards this goal. If you can help secure a donation from a business or individual, or would like
to make a personal donation towards this, please contact Mr. Amato. His email is camato@sisd.net,
and he will gladly give you more information.
"FREEDOM TREE CEREMONY" - A dedication ceremony will be held on May 19, 2007 at 8:30 a.m.
(I am sending everyone a separate form for this). I inadvertently sent the form and resent it to
some of you again as it had the wrong subject line on it (my apologies). We are really excited
about this project. Mr. Amato is having a landscaping contractor come in and will be getting bids
for this. I felt it would be a great community project to do as the school is in need of trees
and what better way to get together with the community than to plant a tree as a living memorial
in honor of our veterans or someone who is currently serving in the armed forces! This has been
very well received by veterans groups such as the VVA and VFW and they will be challenging other
local VFW to participate in this as well. I hope that all of you will be a part of the "Freedom Free" drive,
if not by personally being there to plant a tree, then perhaps by sending in a donation in memory
of/honor of a veteran or someone that is currently serving. (See below for more detailed information
on this activity)
Power Point regarding Sgt Ituarte's Biography and Flag Ceremony. Ms. Gonzalez, who is a 2nd grade
teacher at the school is putting the finishing touches on Sgt Ituarte's biography and wants it to
be just right....We are looking forward to this. Ida and Tury Tovar (Roberto's daughter and
son-in-law) took some pictures and film of the Flag Ceremony which was held to dedicate a flag to
the school. This flag was previously flown at the Capitol and was dedicated to the school by
Congressman Silvestre Reyes.
Remember, that together we can make these projects a reality.
